How to Keep Seniors Safe During Severe Weather

By , 11:02 am on

When it comes to natural disasters, no one is immune to the devastating effects that they can have on the residents in the areas where they occur. However, seniors are often significantly more at-risk during severe weather and need the most help getting to safety. Below, read through our tips and learn how you can best protect your loved one and keep them safe during severe weather.

Preparing for Hurricanes

As soon as news breaks of a potential incoming hurricane, it is best to help your senior begin preparing immediately. This starts with deciding if your senior will remain in their home or evacuate to a safer location. If they will be staying, they will need to be stocked with bottled water, non-perishable foods, batteries and flashlights, and medications and vitamins. If they are evacuating, safe and fast travel plans will need to be arranged.

Preparing for Wildfires

Since wildfires can move in quickly and escalate fast, a plan needs to be laid out ahead of time. That way you and your senior can act on it at a moment’s notice. It’s a good idea to know what the community has planned in terms of evacuations and various routes to safety. You can also prepare a to-go bag and keep it in a known location. It should include items like N95 respirator masks, medications and vitamins, water and food, and any essential documents. Don’t forget to include pets in your plans as well! Most importantly… Don’t wait if a wildfire is moving in. Act fast!

Preparing for Tornadoes

Like wildfires, tornadoes come and go quickly, and they don’t allow time for planning. Decisions should be made prior to a tornado hitting so that action can be taken immediately. Your senior will need to know whether to seek nearby shelter or remain in their home. If they stay in their home, help them identify a safety room such as a basement, storm cellar, or windowless room. Should they miss any local tornado warnings, teach them how to identify a tornado by sight and sound as well.
